Beautiful Begur…
4.05.16 | Oliver BroadJust 2 hours north of Barcelona lies the beautiful hilltop town of Begur, home to the Costa Brava’s No. 1 hotel on TripAdvisor (with only 10 rooms!) and a host of sightseeing opportunities, beautiful beaches and covers all wrapped in one truly Spanish package waiting to be discovered which is exactly what Oliver did recently…
Barcelona itself is one of Europe’s most popular cities to visit and it’s easy to see why; there are not many capital cities of this size around the world offering such a vibrant mixture of attractions along with 9km of sandy beaches. All an easy 2hr flight from Birmingham or East Midlands. Many have already visited Barcelona yet few choose to explore the surrounding areas. Car hire is an easy option with roads much less congestion than those in the UK. The drive from Barcelona to Begur is around 1.5hrs and once past the city the journey offers a rolling countryside landscape. (Closer to Begur is Genoa airport too). The area around Begur is a great base to use to explore this traditional part of Spain.
Begur itself is a small town dating back to the 16th Century and attracts heavy numbers of visitors in the summer months so why not make use of the mild winter climate where temperatures rose to 22C on Valentines weekend when I visited. Expect a lower 15C on average but with a few hours in the middle of most days it makes a great escape from our dull British winter. There are a handful of lovely boutiques and restaurants in the town but that’s it’s real charm, perfect for a quiet stroll and a peaceful meal. My favourite spot for dinner has to be the Aiguaclara. This charming converted private residence was just the ticket for a Valentines dinner with a love theme throughout the building. Bookings are essential at the weekend with live jazz on Saturdays. A family friendly environment, the welcoming team will make you feel at home in their quirky décor and fun touches to add a little humour to your evening,
I would recommend staying near the beach at Aiguablava, the hotel of its namesake is a beautiful spot where my Mother & Father enjoyed a stay in the 1980’s and the hotel still holds a strong reputation as one of the best in the area.
You will most definitely feel relaxed in this part of Spain and so if a few days to de-stress are in order with mind blowing sunsets, cobbled streets and hill top views from the a medieval castle sound like heaven I can’t recommend it highly enough.
The area is most definable romantic, but for those with little ones in tow nearby activity centre’s and attractions are on offer. It is amore authentic activity destination…you won’t find any kids clubs here but you will find woodland pursuits with hiking, quad biking and cycling to name a few.
Slightly north, a visit to Playa Ila Roja is a must with it’s dramatic rugged coastline, you can drive or walk there too (around 1 hour from Begur). Reminiscent of a Malibu California post card, it’s fun to still find quieter coves untouched from developments and mass tourism, especially so close to the UK and in none other than Spain – the most visited country by the Brits!
Have more time on your hands? I suggest staying in Barcelona for your city fix then venture up to Begur to relax and explore, a perfect combination.
