This comprehensive tour of China visits the treasures of Beijing, the Terracotta Warriors at Xian, picturesque scenery between Guilin and Yangshuo, and the pandas at Chengdu. It includes a Cruise on the Yangtze river and a visit to the Three Gorges Dam, before ending the tour in cosmopolitan Shanghai.
Day 1: Fly to Beijing
Overnight flight from London (regional connections available) direct to Beijing with British Airways. Please speak to your tour consultant if you wish to discuss alternative flight options. (N)
Day 2: Beijing
Arrive and transfer to the Regent Hotel for 3 nights. In the afternoon, you will be able to walk around the Summer Palace gardens. This luxury tour also includes afternoon tea at the Aman hotel. (N)
Day 3: Beijing
In the morning, you can visit Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, this will be followed by a tour of the ancient Hutong district by rickshaw. Your day will end with a visit to Jing Shan Park for a bird’s-eye view of the Forbidden City. (B, L)
Day 4: Great Wall
You will will have a full-day excursion to the Great Wall at Jinshanling, this is a quiet and one of the most dramatic sections of the wall. A picnic lunch will be provided. (B, L)
Day 5: Xian
Your day will start with a visit to the Temple of Heaven. Afterwards, you will catch the High-speed train* to Xian and will stay at the Sofitel on Renmin Square for 2 nights. (B)
Day 6: Terracotta Warriors • Xian
In the morning there will be an excursion to the Terracotta Warriors, followed by a visit to the Tang Bo Art Museum. You can also have a lesson in Chinese calligraphy. In the afternoon you will visit the Muslim quarter and Grand Mosque, with a stroll among the stalls of the bazaar. There is also an optional evening excursion to a Tang dynasty music performance with dinner. (B, L)
Day 7: Fly to Guilin
This day starts with a tour of the city walls, it will then continue to the Wild Goose Pagoda. There is an afternoon visit to the tomb of Emperor Jingdi (Hanyangling), you will then fly to Guilin and stay at the Shangri-La, Guilin for 1 night. (B, L)
Days 8-9: Yangshuo
Your first tour is a morning cruise down the Li river, past a breathtaking landscape of limestone hills, traditional fishing villages and rice fields. You will arrive in Yangshuo and stroll along busy West Street, then transfer to the Banyan Tree Yangshuo for a 2-night stay. The following day is at leisure to enjoy the relaxed riverside atmosphere of Yangshuo. (B)
Day 10: Fly to Chengdu
In the morning you will fly to Chengdu, then transfer to the Shangri-La Chengdu for 1 night. In the afternoon you can visit Jinli Street and the Wenshu monastery. There is an optional evening excursion to enjoy a Sichuan opera performance. (B)
Day 11: Chongqing
This day starts with a visit to the Giant Panda Research Base. After this visit, there is a train journey* to Chongqing, and a transfer to a local restaurant for a traditional hotpot dinner. In the evening, you will board the Victoria Jenna* (or similar) for a 3-night cruise to Yichang. (B, L, D)
Day 12: Yangtze river cruise
Full-day cruise along the upper reaches of the Yangtze with a morning excursion to Shibaozhai or Fengdu. (B, L, D)
Day 13: Yangtze river cruise
Full day passing through the Three Gorges. The cliffs here reach up to 1,200 metres tall. Even after the dam, they remain hugely impressive. In the evening you will pass through the locks. (B, L, D)
Day 14: Fly to Shanghai
In the morning you will visit the impressive Three Gorges Dam, you will then disembark in Yichang and fly to Shanghai for a 2-night stay at the Fairmont Peace Hotel. (B)
Day 15: Shanghai
There is a morning tour of Jade Buddha temple, Yu garden and the historic Bund. There is also an optional evening visit to the state acrobatics show. (B)
Day 16: Fly to London
Transfer to the airport and fly back to London. (B)
