Which island is right for me?

3.02.15 | Lisa Burton

We quite often get asked the question, “Should I visit the Caribbean or the Indian Ocean?”  It is a difficult question to answer but we can certainly shed some light on the differences.

One main thing to consider is how much you would like to invest in your holiday.  It really can help narrow down our suggestions.  Within the Caribbean itself there will be resorts ranging from three- to five-star, as well as private islands which can booked in their entirety!  Prices can vary greatly depending on the season you travel, and it can be worth considering shoulder-season dates for better value for money.

The Caribbean islands each have their own personality, usually based on their history, which can quite often be very interesting. For example, the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia changed hands between the English and the French no less than 14 times!  Grenada is famous for its spices, Barbados for snorkelling, food and nightlife, and Jamaica for its music. You can get a real sense for an island’s vibe quite quickly.

Over in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is the largest island and offers much more than a beach holiday.  When I visited we enjoyed a quad biking experience through the national park where we saw zebra and other wildlife.  Beautiful waterfalls and dramatic scenery are on offer if you get itchy feet. Accommodations range from home-away-from-home hotels to full-scale resorts. There is a lot of competition on the island which means it can be excellent value for money.

The Seychelles offer a variety of lush island experiences, all within easy reach. A variety of accommodation types mean that there will certainly be somewhere for you. Overall, the destination has a more authentic and exclusive feel about it.

Over in the Maldives, you have a completely different style of holiday, with the ultimate desert island experience waiting for you. Some of the islands are very remote and so a longer seaplane transfer is required.  Let us help recommend the most suitable island for you. Some are extremely small and so you don’t want to risk getting island fever, while others are larger even with their own golf course!  You may be surprised to know that many cater for families.
